Reading books to reduce stress

I love to read novels. It takes me to another place for awhile. I find it helps me to de-stress in our hard times we are having. I can just get into the book for hours. I can really get so into reading I don`t even hear anything going on around me. I love it.

That's something I've been

That's something I've been missing in the last year or so. I've been back-logged on some work related reading, and I've read few novels in the last while.

I agree that a good book can give you a break from stress. Part of my problem is in justifying not trying to do something more financially product in that time, I guess. I have to just find a balance.

I totally agree. I read

I totally agree. I read daily for just some time to myself. And crossword puzzles too. We all need time to relax everyday and turning on the TV (especially the news) isn't conducive to relaxing at all.

I use to read all the time,

I use to read all the time, I would read a book a week and I would get lost in it just like you say, but since the Internet my books have been replaced, I find I am not as de stressed as I use to, I keep trying to get back into reading but my concentration levels are very sparse presently.

I use to be really relaxed

I use to be really relaxed laying down reading a book. It has been a long time since I picked a book up actually. I read magazines and just as Ricardo said--it is hard for me to justify the time. Usually if I have extra time--I am online trying to find new ways to make some extra income.

I may have to pick a book up this week. Smiling

So what sort of extra income endeavors have you found? Do you have any particular professional or life skills you want to capitalize on?

I used to love reading as a kid. I remember getting through books over a thousand pages long back when I was only 13!

Then I discovered the Internet and nearly all I read since then is online. There's no real substitute for a good book though, which is why I really should start reading again. Any suggestions?

I've always been a voracious

I've always been a voracious reader. I just wish more people were readers. The U.S. is becoming a nation of dumbasses. We can use the knowledge.

I read The Alchemist when I was 18, it really made me think. I was having trouble making a really important decision about my life and the book just helped me clear my mind and find out what I really wanted to do deep down.

So have you had any success transforming lead into gold yet? Please let me know so I can dump my gold coins before they become useless! I have no issue with insider trading if I benefit!

I take it you haven't read

I take it you haven't read the book then since it has very little to do with Alchemy.

And if I did figure out how to turn lead into gold then I wouldn't be here, would I? Sticking out tongue

If you are referring to the novel by Paulo Coelho, then yes I read it a couple of years ago while vacationing in Spain. If memory serves me it was about following ones dreams, a Shepard boy who embarks upon a journey.

I was jesting about the lead to gold. But hey if you do ever accomplish that do please share with the rest of us here.
Eye-wink

That's right, hence my previous post.

That was a great read and

That was a great read and offers up some insights into following ones dreams. I trust you found it enjoyable as I did.

Now to clarify my tongue in cheek reference to turning lead into gold. When ever I see the words Alchemy or Alchemist I for some reason reflect upon the Christopher Marlowe play "the Tragical History of Doctor Faustus" which is based on the "Faust" story (a classic German legend depicting the character Faustus who is a protagonist) where a man sells his soul to the devil for power and knowledge. Faustus in Latin means auspicious or lucky.

Anyway that play is another good read if you are into pondering human nature and some of its innate follies.

Reading is a good way for me

Reading is a good way for me to relieve stress from school and work. I usually read Robert Ludlum, Paulo Coelho and John Grisham novels while travelling or before going to sleep.

I read books every night.

I read books every night. Anything I get my hands on actually (thought the overromanticized ones, I tend to ignore). My fave read of all time is Fight Club. Love the movie. Love the book.

Re: Reading books to reduce stress

I love books. I consider reading as a great way to relax and reduce stress. There are other ways to de-stress like: listen to music, watch TV, take a walk or read a book. I usually prefer reading if not walking. I would have to agree that a book can take you to different places. You will have a world of your own and will take your mind off whatever is causing the stress. Just choose a good book and relax.
