UNR on a Netbook

Well I no longer have Microsoft polluting my netbook I just happened to stumble across UNR Linux.  It's "Ubuntu Netbook Remix" and I'm liking it, I mean I really like it.  Now I wouldn't have it on a regular Desktop or regular sized Laptop, but for a Netbook its' really sweet.  The interface is great for the small 10" screen, they have the desktop interface laid out really well for the small real estate.  Of course I tweaked it a bit by -

Removing Firefox (replaced it with Google Chrome)

Removing Evolution email client (replaced with Claws Mail)

Then of course popped on a few tools, anyway.  I'm very impressed with not only the performance but the smooth interface.

UNR Linux on a HP Mini 311

Here's a shot of the resources being used with my email client, Google Chrome running with 5 tab's running, email client, wireless, etc. etc. and it's only using 385 RAM without even touching swap once.

Not bad, again I'm really liking it, I mean I like it allot!  Linux is Cool

Pagan is that your girlfriend's phot on the desktop?  What a whale of a beauty! Rolling on the floor laughing

For the life of me why would anyone want to use a 10" screen for anything other than interacting with an ATM!  I find less and less need to be wired all the time and in fact am discovering a big world exists outside of geekdom!  After nearly 30 years being enamored with gadgets, their luster has dulled.  I decided not to buy a kindle but instead buy an actual physical book to read, less expensive and the print will not be obsolete in a few months!  Believe it or not it will have more resale value in a year or two than a kindle!

Then instead of buying back into the cell phone hype by acquiring a new smart-phone - I found that people can still communicate face to face and have an enjoyable exchange too - go fucking figure.

So  IMO have fun and enjoy the toys with their ever changing set of bells & whistles and prevailing distractions from discovering happiness is not attained externally.

Well it is a beautiful day outside, so off I go to sit and soak up some radiation while reading my new book and drinking a tall cool beverage in the fresh air.

She's not big, she's just a "whole lotta woman!"  Laughing out loud

As far as being "connected", I couldn't agree with you more.  But there are times that I need/want to be connected that's why I replaced my full sized Laptop with the Netbook.  It's much easier to travel with and it's fully functional as a computer.  Then when it comes to reading I mentioned before that I wanted to do a lot of reading on my last trip down to Peru.  So not wanting to pack an entire suitcase with books I broke down and bought the Kindle, it's simply the best eReader there is.  It's not that hyped out "MaxiPad" put out by Apple that try's to do everything 1/2 assed.  Since I've been back from this last trip I find myself reading a shit load more and it's all due to the Kindle, I love it.  Will it replace hard cover's or tech manuals?  No, but it has replaced magazines and paperbacks for me.  I get Reason Magazine, Readers Digest and Reuters subscriptions with it and guess what?  No ad's, I mean zero, zilch, none.  The articles are excellent and it's so bloody easy to read, hell no problems in the direct sunlight, try that with a "MaxiPad" Eye-wink

Anyway -

  • I have a cellphone, it makes calls, has voice mail and does all that really well.
  • No I don't do "texting", I have a fucking phone
  • Portable computing where I can check email, browse the web, watch a DVD, etc. etc.  My little HP Mini works outstanding.  It's small, light and very portable!
  • Reading, my Kindle is simply the best reader there is.  Plus with my eye's going to shit I don't have to wear my reading classes Eye-wink
  • Music, well if I wanna listen to portable music I have a Cowon 7, it's a little bit bigger than a pack of gum, 16 Gig for music and has an FM tuner

This works for me, what I love to do is sit out in the sun with my Kindle, plug my headphones in, smoke a good Hand Made Cigar with a good Single Malt, pure fucking heaven!
