A friend of mine is looking to start a "guys only" book club and we're looking for titles. Any suggestions in the vein of Vonnegut, Pahlniuk, Bret Easton Ellis, etc.?
Personally, I hate Kurt Vonnegut. "Slaughterhouse 5" is one of the worst books I ever read.
Now, Bret Easton Ellis? I absolutely love "American Psycho" (In a strictly non-crazy way).
I personally LOVED Dan Brown and The Davinci Code Series...
I actually agree on the Vonnegut thing. Thought Slaughterhouse-5 was alright but most everything else he writes is just whiny and bitter. My buddy loves him though (has the same tattoo as one of his characters) so I'm sure we'll be forced to read at least a few of his books.
I also like Dan Brown but I preferred Angels & Demons to Da Vinci Code.
I'd suggest having a look at The Havana Room by Colin Harrison. It's about a New York real estate lawyer whose life unravels and is presented with some interesting twists.
Actually the Da Vinci Code was a rip off of a non fiction book. That was "Holy Blood, Holy Grail", I never read it but I listened to a 2-3 hour interview with the Author some years back. I've always wanted to read it, but seriously haven't found the time. Too much time spent reading Tech Manuals
I've seen those Holy Grail guys interviewed and they seemed super pissed. They did all the research, came up with the idea, and then Brown cashes in with all the cash (to be fair though I think Brown won a lawsuit filed by those guys).
I don't how old the guys that we are talking about, but a classic for everyone to read, especialy those in the teens and early twenties, is Jack Kerouac's On the Road. This is a modern Classic, as Kerouac coined the phrase "Beat Generation," that is good for any man that is just going out on his own for the first time.
Anything by William Golding - "Lord of the Flies", "The Inheritors" - for quick reads. I like titles that challenge my perspective and enhance my perception. Check out Umberto Eco as well - "The Name of the Rose" is a classic. "The Last Temptation (of Christ)" by Nikos Kazantzakis is so brilliantly written, it stands as one of my favorites of all time.
I saw an interview with the author of this book, looks very interesting. Basically he takes the risks of today's "connected" society and creates a fictional book. Looks very, very good. Also the Author is an IT Security professional who Consults with the big boy's, including the Whitehouse
Daemon
Well, if you want a bit classical book, you can try Dr Zhivago
And you may consider "The Dangerous Book for Boys" by Conn Iggulden, Hal Iggulden. It is not fiction but it is definitely for guys (or boys) only.
I recommend Franz Kafka. I'm currently reading America and is full of weird twists.
Guaranteed satisfaction. However, his best book in my opinion is the Trial.
Some critics argue that is made to reflect the structure of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment.
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
Filth by Irvine Welsh
The Man with the Golden Arm by Nelson Algren
Post Office by Charles Bukowski
A great book Old Man's War was excellent, I could not put it down. I then stumbled across the sequel Ghost Brigades and I'm gonna read it along with
I just picked up his second book

When I head down to the Sacred Valley here in a couple of weeks
Umberto Eco is my favorite author, hands down.
Umberto Eco is my favorite author, hands down.
Yeah I loved the movie, can't wait to read the novel
Some of the work put out on the Marvel Max line could be considered guys only books. They have enough action to keep anyone entertained.
I enjoyed all of Kurt Vonnegut's books - some more than others - "Sirens of Titan" is a favorite. Then of course there is J.D. Salinger his "The Catcher in the Rye" is a classic. Another is Hermann Hesse - Sidartha, Steppenwolf, Demian and Narcissus and Goldmund are some of my favorites of his. Of course there is always Hunter S. Thompson, if you want some off the wall reading.
I just started John L. Turner's "Medicine, Miracles, and Manifestations" it is a unique perspective on the Metaphysical if that is of interest.
Now if you are looking for strictly reading for men there is always Playboy and Hustler!
