Okay, I'm likely to offend someone here, but just hear me out and approach with an open mind.
I was thinking, people in those vegetative states are alive and well, but they simply don't respond. They're just a living body with nothing in it.
I'm seriously thinking that someone who is in those kinds of states, actually lost their souls, as in their very concepts were just ripped out of their bodies. I'm one to believe in ghosts, and a lot of people believe that souls and spirits do indeed exist, and even though I'm an atheist, I believe in afterlife and reincarnation.
Now, this will be the most far-fetched thing you've heard since Bush making excuses, but I think that a legit and genuine spirit medium, one who can truly channel the dead, could recall the soul and place it back into the body.
I know that's the stupidest thing ever said on this forum probably, but when you really think about it really hard (and while high), it's pretty reasonable.
