I've noticed that people get branded as sex offenders for pretty stupid things. Like that quadraplegic Brian Peppers pulling on a skirt too hard, a family taking pictures of their infants in the bathtub, and taking a piss in the woods.
The intentions of labeling sex offenders is well and good, but there is a huge problem. If I had to choose between a guy slapping me on the ass and wolf-whistling at me, and getting mugged, I'd much rather get sexually harassed, roll my eyes, and say "I don't swing that way."
It turns out that a guy who recently moved into my neighborhood served time for assaulting a guy who supported the wrong football team. Did I get notified that a football hooligan was in the hood? Like Hell I did. But if a guy who got caught pissing in the woods showed up, I'd know he was in the hood and I'd sign the paper to say that I know he's there.
Now, if someone says they're a sex offender, I'd just say "Really? What did you do? That's it? Sheesh, that's not a big deal.". I'm all for protecting people, but there is a clear line between "A threat" and "Not a threat".
Also, the sex offenders register and America being so up in arms about protecting the children causes stuff like this to happen: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/3352895/Day-of-the-dad-paedophilia-hysteria-leaves-men-afraid-to-help.html (Yes, I know, the Telegraph sucks)
One day, society will wake up, and eventually, being a sex offender will lose all meaning, and that's when the trouble really starts.
