More change happens due to exchange of ideas, but I understand why people start swinging.

One of the reasons I'm an independent rather than a member of either the Democratic or Republican Party is that neither one reflects my centrist views.
For instance, I believe that America should have a strong military and be able to defend both the homeland and our allies while deterring any enemy from attacking anyone, but I'm not a big fan of either isolationism or unilateralism. I believe that while military force has its uses, it should be applied wisely and with a clear end game in mind, and not in a "make it up as we go along" fashion as we did in both Afghanistan (2001) and Iraq (2003).
I am also for gay marriage even though I'm not gay, a clear separation between church and state, health care reform that actually benefits the ordinary citizen rather than the bloated health care industry, and a ban on automatic assault weapons. I'm not for a ban on all firearms, but why do people need to get AK-47s and other military-style guns?
