I went to a local hockey game last night and watched our local team, the Green bay Gamblers take over first place by taking down the western division leaders, the Lincoln Stars. This league is for 16-19 tr. olds and the quality has increased dramatically since the games I saw back in 2000. This was my second game watching the Gamblers this year and they did not disappoint. They outshot the Stars 42-30, and generally physically manhandled a team that was much larger than they were.
And, there was a great fight! Neither fighter wore a helmet. They were jawing all game long and were delivering some vicious shots. Things strangely came to a head in the second period as both dropped their gloves before a faceoff in front of the Stars goalie, where we were sitting. They were assigned other players to guard on the opposing team, but just one look and off came the gloves and a good two minute slugfest ensued. Both were bloodied as they left the ice with game misconducts.
The Stars got their asses handed to them last night in brutal fashion. From what I understand, this was a payback game steeming from a trouncing the Gamblers received at the hands of the Stars last year, when the Gamblers were in last place. This year, the Gamblers have a new coach, some new players and they are in first place. I was fully entertained and look forward to the playoffs!
