Overworked And Underpaid?

There is sarcasm in the title.

Is it only me who thinks that football players are paid far too much?

Not only are the wages of some players very high, but so are the bonuses. They even get sponsorship deals that are worth millions.

I once watch a documentary many years ago, and Mrs Beckham went into a well known high street store, picked out the colthes she wanted and asked to see the manager. Lo and behold, a few minutes later she left the shop without paying for a thing.

I don't think so. It should be the right of every person to earn every dollar they can.

According to the NFL

According to the NFL commissioner's office, the average NFL franchise makes a profit of 24 Million per year. That's not much when you think of what is put into it. That's hardly even contract money for 1 star football player. I wouldn't lose any sleep if the NFL started to have problems with attendance and money. It's hard for me to relate to the money they make as it compares to their complaints.

Yep, Billions are made so what's wrong with the players getting paid and paid well for trashing their bodies?

I hear you. My "but" is about the percentage of profits that they make and the way the average ticket price has become exorbitant. When the profit of an entire TEAM becomes the value of an average contract, something is very wrong, especially when their stadiums are publicly subsidized. I would like to see more balance, so to speak.

Moronic that the public pays for the Stadiums, contrary to the Spin Stadiums are a huge expense for a City. They should pay for their own place of business, I'm sick of subsidising Corporate excess.

I agree. How they continue

I agree. How they continue to fleece the public in this manner is UNACCEPTABLE!

Isn't it amazing the wages

Isn't it amazing the wages they are on ? gosh how I could so live on that money and have a ball and yes they get things free because they are celebs, no wonder they have so much, but they do get way too much in their wages.

They are able to earn so

They are able to earn so much because there are plenty of fans willing to pay a lot of money to go to see them and buy their shirts. I would rather have it that the players get a big part of this money rather then the team owners.

Right on Jimbo. The fans

Right on Jimbo. The fans get fleeced either way (not really but we pay high prices) so I would much rather see that cash re-invested in the product on the field instead of going straight into the owner's pocket.

Some wages are stupidly

Some wages are stupidly high, I mean players like Lampard of Chelsea and Ibrahimovic at Inter earn more in a few months than most people and their families put together will earn in their whole lifetimes... It's sickening!

It also contributes to making the sport more top heavy and less competitive, since only a handful of big teams can afford to spend so much money on big budget transfers and pay these players' wages.

Wage caps are the solution IMO, make the wage caps low and it can only benefit team sports like Football (or Soccer, even though I hate the term.)

Hey it is what is known as

Hey it is what is known as the free market! As long as fans are willing to spend the $$$ then the players can command a handsome compensation contract. The owners will also enjoy a healthy return on their investments.

I am not in favor of Stadiums being paid for with tax dollars and the old argument of the revenue generated is a false one at best. That practice needs to end - but unless people get involved and vote the politicians out who support such a behavior shit will never change.

I am not much of a spectator myself - never have been. My preference was in playing the games. But then I have seldom ever paid to attend a professional game - when the mood strikes me to be a spectator i get a better view on the big screen, better beverages from my refrigerator too! The Men's room is also much closer and less crowded! Eye-wink

Although I will admit that

Although I will admit that there's nothing better than a Sunday afternoon in Lambeau Field and the electricity generated by 70+ thousand fans, I actually feel the entertainment value is worth it.

Outside of that, I am aware of MANY NFL players who have left the league injured and have had problems ever since leaving the league. Its an issue the NFL doesn't like to talk about much. All teams provide players with their own health care. They have their own doctors and equipment. They provide the players family's with health insurance as well. A player is entitled to a second opinion and can go outside of what the team provides at his own expense as well. But, once they leave the league, all they have is the option of picking up on a COBRA package, that will only cover them for an additional few years. Then, they are on their own, unless they obtain employment elsewhere that may provide them with insurance. But the catch there is pre-existing conditions.

That being said, I still feel the money is exorbitant, especially in this economic climate. I feel that the league should recognize this and restructure present agreements to not only reflect what players are paid when in the league, but to also deal with their health insurance once they leave the league.

AO, all seriousness aside, you know that I have tickets. You must come here sometime and experience the wonders of Lambeau Field. It will be an experience that you will never forget. THAT, I can personally guarantee you. I've got three tickets. Maybe Pagan, or Fremen could fill out that threesome!

What say you?

Let's get either Fremen or Pagan to join us. Don't worry about the necessary equipment as i can supply you with that and have friends with hunters suits for cold weather games.

They open up against da Bears on Sunday night, Sept, 13th. That should be warm enough for ya. It'll not only be the season opener, but a national game as well! Think about it...

I will certainly put serious thought to doing that. Take in a game and also score some great cheese and salami too.

Re: Overworked And Underpaid?

I think that it is absolutely insane what these guys get paid. Just look at how much money was paid for Kaka and Ronaldo by Real Madrid this summer. I wonder how much their salaries will be.

Well that seems to be another fair point however I am sure that the folks in congress only earn a small percentage of what guys like Kaka, Ronaldo and Rooney earn.

Well you also have to consider the under the table income, kick backs, and favors in return they seem to get!

I have no problem getting as much as you can for what it is you produce. That is market driven capitalism.

Why would a prostitute give away what she can get paid for?

Re: Overworked And Underpaid?

Tax dollars going to stadiums, that's pretty low. You know, I've heard a few stories where teams threatened to leave their home city if they didn't get a new stadium built. Phht, if Rangers said that, the first words out of my mouth would be "Piss aff then ya fannies!" (As in the Scottish soccer team).

You can tell that I'm not too keen on sports, I can't even tell you who won the superbowl or the world cup, and that's the truth.

Re: Overworked And Underpaid?

That would not happen in Europe I think. Every team is connected to a city and I have never heard of a European soccer team that went to another city because they would get a new stadium for free there.
