Olympics

I have very little interest in the Olympics. I think it's partly because of the allegations of bribery to host the games. Then there's the doping scandals and occasionally there's a blatant screw up by the judges, as happened a few years ago with that Canadian figure skating team.

I bet some people here got into watching the American swimmer at the last summer games - Nothing against most of the athletes.

How do others here feel about the games?

Currently living in BC and

Currently living in BC and preparing to host the 2010 games.....How I feel is disgusted.

Shocked)

There are dozens of reasons for this...not the least of which is the state of the people living here right now....the fact that Canada has failed in the eyes of the world when it comes to children's rights...yet we have billions to spend on fucking GAMES....for a 2 week period?

The fact that people are dying here from freezing to death...yet we are building stadiums and shit that we will use for 2 fucking weeks.

Back in 1986 when we hosted EXPO...we had the same issues. The destitution was swept under a fucking rug while expo was on and the world was here. We sent the homeless to another part of town... We pretended to give a shit about people around the world...all the while closing the ONLY long term mental health facility and putting every single person with severe mental illness - literally - on the streets.... Those people are STILL THERE to this day. (Those who are still alive)

Expo forced thousands of families onto the streets so landlords could rent out their homes for 35x the going rate to tourists. Many of those families never recovered. Losing their children to children's aid...who then grew up in a system where drugs, drop-outs, street prostitution, and crime etc are merely ways of surviving....

Anyway, though there are a FEW people in BC who support the games....they are the one's who are the top income earners and whose lives are not plagued with addiction, mental illness, poverty etc...
The rest of the province is disgusted.

I for one am planning on

I for one am planning on being there. I want nothing more than to see first hand the Biathlon or Skeleton events.

Myself, I refused to watch

Myself, I refused to watch any of the Olympics this last year. IMO the only one who had balls was Germany's PM who refused to go because of the Genocide China is committing. But of course King George and everyone else could give a shit Barf!
Anyway the Olympics are such a face, I won't support them especially after the B.S. of them turning a blind eye to China.

My overall feeling about

My overall feeling about Olympics is a positive one. Even though it has so many bad things attached to it, it still brings the world as one. I guess the main aim of organizing Olympics is to bring more people to people interaction and for that it is priceless. Eye-wink

I think maybe my favourite

I think maybe my favourite moment in Olympic history was when Jesse Owens showed Hitler how fast he could run.

I notice after the last couple weeks of holiday congestion in Vancouver airport, there are some doubts about how well it will be able to handle the tourist traffic next year.

The thing about that

The thing about that disappoints me most about the olympics, is all the events that have been added. It's like the next thing you know, basket weaving and window washing will be the newest competitive events.

I used to like the Olympics,

I used to like the Olympics, until the money and crass commercialization took over. Now, I'm pretty turned off by it. The "spirit" has effectually been killed.

Bah - the airport is much bigger than it was during EXPO. Our problem over the holidays was about the weather and planes being grounded. People didn't go home - they just slept in the friggin airport!
But in general I can agree with you that there are going to be some SEVERE "tourist traffic problems".
Absolutly no doubts at all!

I'm dreading traffic. Sick

Re: Olympics

I loved the opening ceremonies.  Great show.  What I didn't like was how Michael Phelps, who bought home 8 gold medals for the United States.  Almost a hero then he gets accused of using steroids.  Just an accusation but the press destroys him.  WTF is that?  Great support!
