David Carradine Found Dead

Sad This is a very sad day for me. He was my favorite actor.

Actor David Carradine found dead in Bangkok

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BANGKOK -- Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu" who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A news report said he was found hanged in his hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He said the embassy was informed by Thai authorities that Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.

The Web site of the Thai newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room.

It said Carradine was in Bangkok to shoot a movie and had been staying at the hotel since Tuesday.

The newspaper said Carradine could not be contacted after he failed to appear for a meal with the rest of the film crew on Wednesday, and that his body was found by a hotel maid at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. The name of the movie was not immediately available.

It said a preliminary police investigation found that he had hanged himself with a cord used with the room's curtains. It cited police as saying he had been dead at least 12 hours and there was no sign that he had been assaulted.

A police officer at Bangkok's Lumpini precinct station would not confirm the identity of the dead man, but said the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park hotel had reported that a male guest killed himself there.

Carradine was a leading member of a venerable Hollywood acting family that included his father, character actor John Carradine, and brother Keith.

In all, he appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby. One of his prominent early film roles was as singer Woody Guthrie in Ashby's 1976 biopic "Bound for Glory."

But he was best known for his role as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin priest traveling the 1800s American frontier West in the TV series "Kung Fu," which aired in 1972-75.

He reprised the role in a mid-1980s TV movie and played Caine's grandson in the 1990s syndicated series "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues."

He returned to the top in recent years as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's two-part saga "Kill Bill."

The character, the worldly father figure of a pack of crack assassins, was a shadowy presence in 2003's "Kill Bill - Vol. 1." In that film, one of Bill's former assassins (Uma Thurman) begins a vengeful rampage against her old associates.

In "Kill Bill - Vol. 2," released in 2004, Thurman's character comes face to face again with Bill himself. The role brought Carradine a Golden Globe nomination as best supporting actor.

Bill was a complete contrast to his TV character Kwai Chang Caine, the soft-spoken refugee from a Shaolin monastery, serenely spreading wisdom and battling bad guys in the Old West. He left after three seasons, saying the show had started to repeat itself.

After "Kung Fu," Carradine starred in the 1975 cult flick "Death Race 2000." He starred with Liv Ullmann in Bergman's "The Serpent's Egg" in 1977 and with his brothers in the 1980 Western "The Long Riders."

But after the early 1980s, he spent two decades doing mostly low-budget films. Tarantino's films changed that.

"All I've ever needed since I more or less retired from studio films a couple of decades ago ... is just to be in one," Carradine told The Associated Press in 2004.

"There isn't anything that Anthony Hopkins or Clint Eastwood or Sean Connery or any of those old guys are doing that I couldn't do," he said. "All that was ever required was somebody with Quentin's courage to take and put me in the spotlight."

One thing remained a constant after "Kung Fu": Carradine's interest in Oriental herbs, exercise and philosophy. He wrote a personal memoir called "Spirit of Shaolin" and continued to make instructional videos on tai chi and other martial arts.

In the 2004 interview, Carradine talked candidly about his past boozing and narcotics use, but said he had put all that behind him and stuck to coffee and cigarettes.

"I didn't like the way I looked, for one thing. You're kind of out of control emotionally when you drink that much. I was quicker to anger."

"You're probably witnessing the last time I will ever answer those questions," Carradine said. "Because this is a regeneration. It is a renaissance. It is the start of a new career for me.

"It's time to do nothing but look forward."

I concur. In the back of my mind, I'm really hoping this is a publicity stunt, but in the forefront, I know better.

RIP, David. Sad

That's sad. I saw him at least once on the set of Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, the TV sequel that was shot in Toronto in the nineties.

It was cool seeing him work, and of course there were some anecdotes about his drinking but the word was that he always nailed his scenes. At the time I thought he looked pretty good and happy, making jokes, etc. I'll remember him like that.

The last movie I saw him in was "Dead and Breakfast", great flick, funny as hell. But It's such a shame to see him gone.

Re: David Carradine Found Dead

Ricardo, The Legend Continues was my favorite series in the world. I have recorded about half of it and was well aware that it was shot in Toronto. Chris Potter was also good in that series. Carradine always knew he was better than Hollywood and marched to his own drummer. That's what I liked about him. You're right about his acting ability. He loved the wild west and did some material "Wild West Tech" as well. And you're right. He always nailed his material. I hope more info comes out on his death. Part of me can see him going out in flames, but would still like to know if foul play was involved.

I loved Kung Fu and grew up on it, the second series was "OK". But as much as I loved David in Kung Fu I do wish the Bigots in Hollywood would have cast the creator of the series as "Kwai Chang Caine", Bruce Lee.

But David did well with it and was very good friends with Bruce, again RIP David, you will be missed Sad

Re: David Carradine Found Dead

There was obviously a lot of pain in his life and he had lived a long time with it. Sometimes it gets the best of us, doesn't it? He was done - not many can say they lived and worked into their seventies.
My belief is that there is no peace, my hope is that his spark of the divine is at liberty to rejoice.
Good ol' Grasshopper, Carradine made that role immortal like no one else could.

I watched Larry King Live last night as he had Rob Schneider, Quentin Tarantino, Michael Madsen and others on that stated firmly that Carradine was happy and suspected foul play. They also pointed out that Bruce Lee's cause of death was never discovered and raised questions about what happened.

If anybody cares, I have the complete Kung Fu original series on DVD and would be honored to make copies upon request. I also have many on his films on VHS.

Yeah Boan, I saw that report as well.

I read he'd been drinking beer all day the day before he was found (there's a time and a place for that, I'd say - No judgment here) and apparently the security cameras don't show anyone else entering his suite.

I don't know - I'm not sure I would have guessed that someone in their 70s would be into the rope and auto-erotic thing, but who knows?

The singer from INXS went out like that didn't he?

Carradine was a kinky bastard? Who'd a thunk it? He did sort of have that vibe, though - kind of Dennis Hopper's character, Frank Booth, from Blue Velvet. Only, more soft spoken.

At first, I was a little disappointed. But, his family has contacted the FBI for help. Turns out, the hotel won't turn over the security surveillance video tape of the entrances and parking lot and despite the fact of his "life interests", definitely don't believe the suicide claim and also don't believe he was getting his rocks off either. He would not have used the hotel curtain rope if he was "specially equipped". There's more to this and his family explained that on Larry King last night.

Yeah, something's not right. Dr. Drew was even on that show last night and stated with no uncertain terms that DC didn't fit the bill for this type of activity. Pretty strong stuff.

Two new items to bring to the table. A footprint on the bed did not match anything that Carradine or his friends were wearing, and his hands were tied behind his back, leading to the question of "HOW COULD HE TIE HIMSELF UP WITH HIS HANDS TIED BEHIND HIS BACK?".

I don't really care either way.

If he was murdered that is bad
If he offed himself that is worse and sad.
If he was doing some kinky sex, I hope it was worth it.

He Was Getting His Freak On.

In a separate interview with TMZ.com , Jensen – who divorced Carradine in 1997 – said the actor was able to tie himself up without assistance and did so at home.

Two of Carradine's ex-wives have spoken publicly on his unusual sexual preferences.

His third wife Gail Jensen said he liked to tie himself up at home and ride horses bareback wearing nothing by a Speedo in an interview with RadarOnline.com.

His fourth wife Marina Anderson alleged in 2003 divorce papers obtained by theSmokingGun.com that Carradine practiced "deviant sexual behavior which was potentially deadly" and said he engaged in an "incestuous relationship with a very close family member."

Not that I know of. I DO know that the family has asked them to do so. This was after the hotel had initailly refused to provide the security tapes shoing the entrance, hallways and parking lots.

Autopsy Finds David Carradine Did Not Commit Suicide

An independent autopsy
conducted on David Carradine’s body concluded that the actor did not commit
suicide.

"On the basis of the information we currently
have, coupled with the autopsy findings, Carradine's death does not appear to
be a suicide," Dr. Michael Baden, who performed the autopsy, told
FOXNews.com Thursday.

Baden said that the final results of the cause of
death would likely be available "within a week or two."

"In any death, before arriving at a final
cause, one has to gather not only the autopsy results, but also the findings at
the scene of the death, the crime lab information and the toxicology results.
In this situation, some of those investigations have not been completed
yet," Baden said. "But the information we now have does rule out a
suicide."

Carradine was found dead a week ago, hanging in a
closet of a Bangkok hotel room.

Meanwhile, Carradine's brothers have asked for
understanding as Thai authorities investigate.

Keith and Robert Carradine say they're grateful for
the outpouring of support during what they call a "profoundly painful time."
In a statement read Thursday in Los Angeles, they also thanked U.S. and Thai
authorities for their work.

Hotel surveillance footage indicated no one entered
Carradine's room before he died, the policeman leading the death investigation
said last Saturday.

Police initially said Carradine's body was found
"naked, hanging in a closet," causing them to suspect he committed
suicide, though no suicide note was found.

Carradine's Career Highlights

Immediately following the rumors of a suicide, the
actor’s family, friends and associates denounced the possibility of him taking
his own life.

Last Friday, police said the actor may have died
from accidental suffocation or heart failure after revealing that he was found
with a rope tied around his neck and penis — leading to speculation that
Carradine may have engaged in a dangerous form of sex play known as auto-erotic
asphyxiation.

Carradine Was Desperate For Money

Pornthip Rojanasunand, director of Thailand's
Central Institute of Forensic Science, said the circumstances under which
Carradine died suggest the 72-year-old actor may have indeed been performing
auto-erotic asphyxiation. The practice involves temporarily cutting off the
supply of oxygen to the brain to heighten the effects of a sexual climax.

"In some cases it can suggest murder, too. But
sometimes when the victim is naked and in bondage, it can suggest that the
victim is doing it to himself," said Pornthip, considered the country's
top criminal forensics expert. She did not take part in the autopsy.

"If you hang yourself by the neck, you don't
need so much pressure to kill yourself," she said. "Those who get
highly sexually aroused tend to forget this fact."

Carradine's body was discovered Thursday morning in
his luxury suite by a chambermaid at Bangkok's Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel,
said its general manager, Aurelio Giraudo.

Carradine flew to Thailand and began work on a film
titled "Stretch" two days before his death. His friends and
associates insisted he would not have killed himself, telling CNN's Larry King
he had a happy marriage, recently bought a new car, and had several films lined
up after he finished work in Bangkok.

Carradine, a martial arts practitioner himself, was
best known for the U.S. TV series "Kung Fu," which aired from
1972-75. He played Kwai Chang Caine, an orphan who was raised by Shaolin monks
and fled China after killing the emperor's nephew in retaliation for the murder
of his kung fu master.

Carradine also appeared in more than 100 feature
films with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby.

He returned to the top in recent years as the title
character in Quentin Tarantino's two-part saga "Kill Bill." Bill, the
worldly father figure of a pack of crack assassins, was a shadowy presence in
2003's "Kill Bill — Vol. 1." In that film, one of Bill's former
assassins (Uma Thurman) begins a vengeful rampage against her old associates,
including Bill.

Re: David Carradine Found Dead

Maybe David Carradine has had too much and can’t take any much of everything. Some people may not show how much they are hurting inside. He may not have strength and courage for him to keep on moving.

One local news in the Philippines made a raging noise in the past month. The wife of a News anchor found dead inside their daughter’s bathroom flooded by her own blood, the said issue was proven that her wife committed suicide (personal problem that she said she can’t face no more). It’s quite saddening that some people may be in depression and thinks that the answer to their every question is to end everything.

So I've heard what we suspected I guess - That autopsy results indicate it wasn't suicide. That's even more tragic.

I wonder if we'll ever know what really happened, or who was responsible.

What was found does not rule out the possibility that he died of unintentional asphyxiation, however...

Jerk Off-Is that rope a little tight?
