Okay, let me give you all some facts.
In June 2007, there were 2,299,116 people in prison. Roughly half the population of Scotland.
It costs roughly $50/day (being very generous here) to take care of a prisoner. 100 million down the drain every day, or 4 trillion a year. On top of that, repeat offender rates are surprisingly high.
In addition, disease spreads throughout prisons due to overcrowding, and I read somewhere that the most common rape victim is indeed a man in prison, meaning the friendly neighborhood shower rapist is probably spreading plenty of STDs around.
It all boils down to this: "You're doing it wrong!"
So, how can prisons be changed? From reducing how often people are in prison, and actually leaving the Hellhole as a changed person, not someone who did time. I think making the prisons more like a place for actual treatment of criminal behavior than "lock them up" would be a good start.
