WASHINGTON - President Obama was briefed on potential holiday threats just three days before a Nigerian with Al Qaeda ties tried to bring down an airliner on Christmas Day, according to a report.
A senior U.S. official said the briefing focused on a document titled "Key Homeland Threats," but that it did not mention Yemen, Newsweek reported on its Web site.
An Al Qaeda cell in the Middle East country was believed to be behind Umar Abdulmutallab's attempt to detonate a bomb that had been sewn into his underpants on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
The official did not release any details about the briefing, including what specific warnings, if any, the President received and whether Yemen was discussed.
Attorney General Eric Holder, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and FBI Director Robert Mueller were at the briefing.
Administrative officials admitted after the attempted attack that they had "bits and pieces" of information that if knitted together could have foiled the Christmas Day plot.
Meanwhile, Obama's highly-touted choice to clean up airport security screening may have misled Congress on how he used his cop connections to dig up dirt on his ex-wife's boyfriend. The allegations about Erroll Southers, the nominee to head the troubled Transportation Security Administration, surfaced as senators mull his nomination for the vital post.
Southers, a former cop and FBI agent, told senators in October that he had a San Diego cop pal run a background check on his estranged wife's boyfriend in 1988. But in November, Southers admitted that he ran background checks himself - twice.
