Twilight Shmilight

Hey everybody! It’s been a long time, longer than I would have liked but grad school has been kicking me in the pants. I have some potentially exciting updates to share but first let’s jump to this week’s review*.

*Ok, I won’t promise on the life of my mother, but I am going to do my very best to get back into the swing of things and put up a new review every week.

Lat den ratte komma in/Let the Right One In (2008)
Director: Tomas Alfredson
Writer: John Ajvide Lindqvist (based on novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist)
Actors: Kare Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson

In a year when vampires are enjoying a renewed place in the spotlight sadly thanks to such Hollywood fare as Twilight (grossed close to $200 million in the US so far), another vampire film has quietly made quite the impression on more discerning viewers. Let the Right One In is a phenomenal new Swedish film that is a must see for just about anyone.

Oskar is a 12 year old loner who seems to have trouble making friends, let alone keeping out of the path of the bullies who torment him daily. Everything changes when he meets Eli, a mysterious girl who moves into his apartment building in the middle of the night. The two children connect through their mutual loneliness but it doesn’t take long for Oskar to realize that Eli is hiding a sinister secret.

Let the Right One In
is not a horror movie, at least not in the traditional sense. It is a darkly bittersweet drama with horror elements that takes on the vampire mythology from a fresh if chilly perspective. The film is set in the dead of winter and the ever snow white setting lends a feeling of numbing emptiness that complements the story in all the right ways. The plot is character-driven with brief moments of brutality that are over almost as soon as they begin. You feel for these children even as you realize that their moral compasses may be diseased.

The cinematography in Let the Right One In is interesting and deliberate. The camera is not merely there to relay a story but to manipulate every step of the telling. On several occasions, the focus sharply zeroes in on the one stationary subject in the frame while all the action of interest remains blurred in the background where the viewer has to make assumptions about what is actually happening. I found myself almost frustrated that I wasn’t able to look at what was really taking place but at the same time, it forced me to be all the more conscious of the choices being made in the telling of the story.

The only thing that keeps me from giving Let the Right One In a top rating of four black sheep is one solitary scene. For the majority of the film, the special effects are subtle but disturbingly effective, giving the viewer just enough to understand the gravity of what is happening. For reasons I can’t possibly fathom, there is a scene where CGI is grossly and comically overused to the point of distraction. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you see the movie and in my mind it is a tragic besmirching of great filmmaking. The fact that this is such an excellent film makes it all the more sad.

There you have it. Now go out and rent this one or even buy it; you won’t be sorry!

Now on to my news: I am in the planning process for a podcast that will be available for what I hope will be your listening pleasure sometime mid to late summer of this year. I will have a co-host and we will be discussing movies, movies, and more movies that fit under the general category of genre/cult/outside-the-mainstream. I have a lot of ideas for the different segments that will be featured but I’m still in the brainstorming stage, so if you have any suggestions, please feel free to comment. Most likely the name will be The CineFiles of Citizen Irene or something similar and once the podcast launches, it will replace this blog. I will keep you posted and please, please send your comments my way!

Ha, I just sent you an email asking if you've seen this. Howzit Brudda
I saw it a few weeks ago, excellent movie. I love the setting, the tone and the way the story played. The ending also was great, I won't give it away but I like how one can interpret it to be ether a "happy" or "dark" ending. I loved it, I saw it twice in a row it was so good. Pimp, cool brother

I just got your email, what timing! But seriously, how did you feel about the cat scene?! It was so out of place to me in the context of the rest of the film. Gaudy and cheesy. It makes me mad just thinking about it. What were they thinking?

Neh .... didn't think to much about it, I think they threw it in there for a bit of variety. What I really liked is the story line of what I would call a "pure" love, but then how it's not a Disney tale if you know what I mean. This is what I picked up by the way it ended.

I look forward to having a more in-depth conversation with you about this movie but I don't want to talk too much about specifics on here for the sake of those who haven't seen it yet. With that said, I really appreciate the ending that leaves a lot up to interpretation. Keeps you thinking long after the credits roll. And isn't the kid who plays Oskar great?

Oh he definatly kicked ass, did you watch the extras? The director took great care in selecting the case and it showed. Each one of them IMO were perfect for the part, they fit so very well. I'm bummed that I missed it on the big screen, they had it playing here in Seattle for a few weeks. But that's OK, I'm gonna get it on Blu-ray, well that is after I get a new bulb for my TV. yeah, bulb burnt out right before my trip Frustrated
Oh well, anyway back to the movie. There were a few points that I could have left out, the "cat thing" and just after the "cat thing" in the Hospital. Actually I think I got up and made me a sandwich or something during that time Happy Feet!
But over all the movie just rocks! Rock OUT! Beavis and Butthead
Applause

How Could You Not Love This Movie!

It's a Swedish gem. The cat scene was just another creepy scene in a creepy movie intended to portray a creepy era in Swedish history.

I got the creepies when Oskar peeked in while Eli ("Oskar, I'm not a girl") was changing, when s/he/it got in bed with him at his dad's house, then showing her feet after asking the nurse for "my father's" room. Then there was the pool scene and on the train at the end.

We have to rate Eli with the other kid vampires. Let's see -- Kirsten Dunst in "Interview," that midget-ish kid in the classic "Near Dark," then both productions of King's forgettable "Salem's Lot." Dunst whined too much and King's kids were more like cartoons. Eli ties with the "Near Dark" kid.

Who am I leaving out?

As for ranking with Swedish creepshows, it doesn't hold a candle to "Haxan" or "The Seventh Seal." But then we don't know the back story either -- Eli's origins, her age, all that. Of course, I watched it the only way there is -- in Swedish.

Just my opinion, I could be a wrong.

Thanx with extra cheese for Pagan and Citizen Irene getting me to watch it.

I must admit, I have a bias against Twilight simply because it is popular. It's the new Star Wars, a new canon especially geared toward teenage girls and bisexual or gay boys. Is there a Twilight perfume and aftershave yet? There will be.

In any event, I want to see this movie because some of theTwilight fans absolutely hate it and are expressing their love on another movie board.
